How to Add Style and Function to an Outdoor Pergola

An outdoor pergola can add style to your outdoor space and add a bit of shade as well. They typically have a very traditional look to them and can be built over a patio or over a gate to an entryway. When you're ready to add a pergola to your yard, you might consider a few quick tips on how to add style and function. This will ensure your pergola works with your home's décor and with your needs for an outdoor area. Note the following suggestions.

1. Adding shade

A pergola is made with beams that are spaced apart for light and air circulation. In order to give your space more shade, add smaller wood slats between the beams of the frame, or consider adding a folding shade. A folding shade can be pulled over the roof of the pergola so that it can be opened and closed as needed. Be sure you figure this cost when deciding on the size of a pergola for your outdoor patio space.

2. Adding privacy

Because of their open design, a pergola might not offer much privacy between you and the neighbors. Consider adding outdoor curtains to the sides of the pergola so you can open and close these as needed. You might also add a solid wood panel to the sides while keeping the top open and airy. You'll need to figure this cost too when deciding on a pergola that needs this added feature.

3. Adding noise insulation

Because a pergola is traditionally open on all sides and on the roof, it doesn't do much to insulate the noise you might make when outside or to keep out noise from the neighbors. Insulating outdoor curtains can help with noise abatement, or you might consider thick glass panels for the sides of your pergola. This will keep it open and bright, but the glass will keep out noise from the neighbors and keep in your own noise as well.

4. Creating a modern look

A traditional pergola might have an Asian look to it, and this might not fit your home's décor. You can update the style by using straight beams rather than those with a curved point at the end. Thin horizontal slats that make up the walls of a pergola can also make it seem very modern and updated. Consider painting your pergola a color other than traditional wood tones; try a bright white for something crisp and clean, or a slate grey.

Pergolas can be a great addition to your yard, especially if you follow these tips to make sure they meet all your needs.
