Tips for Creating a Rustic Farmhouse Kitchen

The kitchen is one of the most important rooms in any house for a few reasons. First of all, it is the place where you cook meals and really show your family how much you love them through the food you prepare. Secondly, it is not only a functional room, but also a space where you entertain guests and enjoy leisure time with friends and family. Last but not least, the kitchen is such an important room because it's the most valuable.

For all of these reasons, kitchen remodelling is both exciting and daunting. Something that never fails to impress is a rustic farmhouse kitchen, and if you wish to capture this aesthetic, here are some tips.

Say goodbye to metallic finishes. Many kitchens are awash with chrome, and yes, chrome is great if you want to achieve a contemporary look, but for old-fashioned kitchens, it's a no-no. If you really want to get metal somewhere into your kitchen, tarnished copper is best. But any sleek and shiny metallic surfaces are a definite no.

On display storage. One of the key elements of any kitchen is the storage. Kitchens have pots and pans, ingredients, cleaning products, appliances and more. Before you are tempted to shut everything away behind closed cupboard doors, something that really works in a farmhouse kitchen is putting those items on display, particularly when it comes to foods. For example, instead of putting fruit away, display it in fruit bowls. You can also hang pots and pans on the outside of cupboards so your kitchen looks lived in and not austere.

Choose an apron sink. If you have to avoid metallic finishes, you are probably wondering what you can do about your sink. A simple and effective solution is an apron sink. An apron sink tends to be made from porcelain or fireclay, and they sit much deeper than most regular sinks. This makes them a dramatic focal point at the centre of any farmhouse kitchen. You should just be aware that because of their size they often have to work with custom made countertops.

Wooden countertops. Wood is an essential component of any farmhouse kitchen, and yet this is a dangerous kitchen material because it isn't water resistant and it stains. This means that if you opt for wooden countertops, and these do look great in farmhouse kitchens, you need to choose the right kind of wood. Teak is a good option because it's high oil content actually makes it more resistant to water and spillages than other varieties.

Enjoy your beautiful farmhouse kitchen!
