How to Design a Decluttered Kitchen

A clean-lined, minimal kitchen creates a calming vibe as it's not crowded with busy details and design elements clamouring for attention. But it can be tricky to achieve a streamlined look in this room, as it requires so many components like cabinetry, appliances, and plumbing. Here are several ways to reduce visual clutter during your renovation. You may not want to implement all of them, as details can add visual interest. But you can pick and choose to create the kitchen you want.

Glass Splashback

The splashback provides one spot that often features a lot of detail. For example, tiles leave tracks of horizontal and vertical grout lines. To make this wall area more minimal, consider sleeker alternatives. For example, a glass splashback can be back-painted in various colours. And several large sheets of glass join smoothly, so the connections aren't that noticeable. Without busy patterns, the colour tends to stand out more too. So a fresh mint or a striking black will be more central to the design.

Polished Concrete Flooring

A floor surface to consider for a clean look is polished concrete flooring. It forms a continuous surface that isn't broken up into individual ceramic or stone tiles or timber planks. Polished concrete is full of stones and pebbles that are smoothed and buffed, giving the flooring texture and warmth. Thus, it has visual interest without a pattern of grout lines. The shiny surface will also bounce light around the kitchen, making it feel more spacious.

Flat Cupboard Doors

Also, pay attention to the cupboard doors when creating minimal kitchens. Contoured profiles add lines and patterns, which all add up over an entire wall of cabinetry. Instead, you could install flat cupboard doors, which will give a sleek look. Handleless models feature fewer pieces of hardware to break up the door finish. Concealing the appliances behind uniform cabinetry will reduce clutter, too. A fridge will have a different size and shape than an oven, and integrating these components creates uniformity.

Undermount Sink

You might not think the rim of a sink adds much clutter. However, an under-mount sink does look cleaner and more streamlined. The trim on an above-mount sink creates a metal frame around the sink that contrasts with the countertop material. Whereas an under-mount sink is more discreet as it's not highlighted with a rim. The texture and colour of the countertop will thus look more seamless and will not be interrupted.
